Let’s start with the difference between a mobile site and an app. Mobile websites are sites that can be viewed on any mobile – iPhone, Nokia, Android, Blackberry… you name it.
An app is an ‘application’ that adds something extra; a game, a calculator, key information or functionality someone will use again and again. And because the user will download the app to their phone (and possibly even pay you money to use the app!) it needs something that separates it from a website. Typical apps would be:
- Calculators or tools - These are practical downloads that make life easier for you. realityhouse favourite are percentalator and Tube deluxe.
- Advice Centres - Here you have a regularly updated app that gives you advice and information that is useful for your everyday business such as “Analytics” – that brings your website statistics to your mobile.
- Training tools - Online training has now become mobile training as user assess and review online training on their smartphones.
- Publications - The iPad is transforming publishing with interactive brochures and magazines that are updated via feeds.
- Locators - Find my nearest restaurant, free wi-fi connection, car park or local office. Try AA Parking.
Technically, you will need a different app for each phone operating system – which can make it a more expensive route to market than a mobile website. But, if you can persuade someone to download and re-use your app then your name and your expertise will be viewed every day.
The only limit is your imagination.
